Official Visit of Joint Russian-South Korean Delegation to the Port of Rajin

On April 17, 2015, a joint Russian-South Korean delegation arrived at the port of Rajin, DPRK, which included representatives of Russian Railways, South Korean consortium companies (POSCO, HMM, KORAIL), officials from the Ministry of Unification, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of the Republic of Korea, representatives of Korean energy companies, employees of the export-import bank (EximBank), the Korean Marine Research Institute, etc. The delegation consists of 18 people from the Republic of Korea and 4 people from the Russian side.

The reason for the visit of such a large delegation to the DPRK was the second pilot shipment of Russian coal to the ports of the Republic of Korea. Two Chinese bulk carriers Yin Hao and Yin Fu arrived for loading into the port of Rajin. The total volume of cargo this time is 95 000 metric ton, which almost doubles the previous pilot shipment in November 2014. The visit program includes monitoring of pilotage and mooring operations in the port, monitoring of the transportation process by rail, unloading at the terminal, cargo handling in the port, carrying out a draft survey of the vessel, sampling of coal, detailed inspection of the road infrastructure between the port of Rajin and border Wonjeong, monitoring and assessment of the departure of the vessel.

The Korean part of the delegation also plans to hold negotiations with the members of Russian Railways for the operation of the railway line. The management of "RasonConTrans" JVC have recently organized and conducted a series of negotiations and discussed the issues of technological terms of ship loading, dredging, the possibility of further increasing the transshipment volumes at the terminal to 5 million tons per year, buying of own tugs for fleet maintenance and other topical issues.

The guests inspected the buildings and structures on the territory of the terminal, which showed that all the facilities are modern and in compliance with their functional purpose. While observing the loading of the vessel, the members of the delegation noted the coherence and high coordination of the work of coastal and marine services. Guests plan to spend a week in the North Korean port and leave the DPRK on April 23 and 24.
